What is it?

Clear cell acanthoma, or Degos Acanthoma is a rare, benign, skin tumor. It usually appears on the lower legs and is usually a single tumor rather than multiple lesions. Physical traits of clear cell acanthoma include:

  • Elevated dome shaped lesion
  • Will either be brown, pink or shiny
  • Usually small (3 mm to 20 mm)
  • Crusty outer edge, may become moist if removed

Who is at Risk?

Currently, there is no definite answer on why this occurs. However, scientists have concluded that mainly middle-aged and older people are more likely to have a clear cell acanthoma. Men and women can both have them.

How is it Diagnosed?

With most skin tumors, they are diagnosed with a skin biopsy. However, in some cases, clear cell acanthoma can be diagnosed through a microscopic examination due to the blood vessels within the tumor. The vessels in these types of tumors are lined up in strings and close to the surface. When examined closely, doctors can see these vessels along with clear glycogen cells.

Treatment Options

Since they are benign, or non-cancerous, these tumors can stay on patients without causing any pain or discomfort. If needed, the tumor itself is removed easily. Although, every patient is different and you should get a skin examination if you may have clear cell acanthoma. It is also important to see a dermatologist if it starts to cause pain or it starts to grow or change.
