Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the United States. But when detected early, it has a 98% 5-year survival rate, which is outstanding. What Does a Dermatologist Do?
Just like a cardiologist specializes in treating the heart and a neurologist specializes in treating the brain, a dermatologist specializes in the skin. Patients often ask us what exactly it is that dermatologists do, and we’re always happy to tell them about the incredible treatment that Dr. Perri provides for his patients in Houston.
Dermatologists specialize in treating a huge range of diseases including:
- Skin cancer
Dr. Perri treats these conditions with a variety of treatments and technology including cryotherapy (freezing off warts), and even surgery.
What is a Skin Cancer Biopsy?
Houston patients should perform self-examinations to check for skin cancer regularly. On top of that, Dr. Perri recommends that his patients visit him for annual checkups so he can perform a full examination of their skin to look for any signs or skin cancer.
If Dr. Perri does discover a lesion, mole, or skin abnormality that he suspects may be cancerous or precancerous, he will perform a biopsy. To do this, he will first numb the area then remove the entire growth or a portion of it. In some cases, Dr. Perri uses a scalpel to cut away the tissue. In others, he will use a cutting tool that is similar to a small cookie-cutter to “punch” out a section of tissue that will then be used in the skin cancer biopsy.
Results from a Skin Cancer Biopsy
Houston patients will usually get the results of their biopsy in about a two to three weeks. Once the tissue has been removed, it will be tested and inspected under a microscope. The tissue will be inspected for a variety of diseases, including:
- All types of skin cancer cells including basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma.
- Growths that don’t have cancer cells, which are called “benign,” including freckles, warts, moles, and skin tags.
- Any other skin conditions like psoriasis.
- Other types of infections like fungus or bacteria.
Even though skin cancer is extremely common (1 in 5 Americans will get it), it also has a very high survival rate when it is detected early. That’s why you should call Dr. Perri today at (281) 943-2749 and start getting annual skin exams. When detected early, skin cancer can be treated very successfully and, in many cases, with very limited discomfort. Give us a call today to learn more or to schedule your appointment.
