It is no surprise that children are prone to skin disorders. From fungal, viral and parasitic infections, children can show signs of many skin conditions. Many forms of these are common and often treated at home. Learn more about common pediatric skin disorders:
Fungal Infections
Fungal skin infections are topical infections that appear on the skin due to excessive amounts of moisture and irritation or friction. The most common infection in children is tinea infections or commonly known as ringworm. This is caused by a fungus on the skin, hair or nails. Most children get this due to shared contact with others, using dirty bathrooms or having touched an animal with ringworm. Treatment for this varies, but usually can be treated with an anit-fungal cream. If the ringworm is located on the scalp or nails, an antifungal medication may be prescribed.
Viral Skin Infections
Viral skin infections are either caused by rashes or skin irritations that are contagious. Warts fall under this category and are most common in children. There are many different types of warts, but they are usually all caused by the same thing. Most warts may go away on their own, but it depends on the type of wart and the location of it. Treatment may include a salicylic acid topical treatment, freezing it with liquid nitrogen, or using electricity to burn it off.
Parasitic Infections
Parasitic infections are caused by parasites that inhabit the skin or hair. The trickiest, and most common parasitic infection in children is lice. This is when tiny insects infest the body hair and cause intense itching. It is very common and very contagious. However, lice is treatable with lice killing shampoo and using a lice comb to remove any insects or eggs on the individual hairs.
All of the common pediatric skin disorders can usually be treated at home, but it is still important to contact your doctor if the condition worsens or does not go away.
