Have you noticed small bumps on your skin, that are often flesh-colored, white or yellow? If so, it’s likely that you are experiencing a very common skin condition called sebaceous hyperplasia. This totally benign condition affects many residents in the area. The sebaceous hyperplasia bumps can vary in size – from being just 1 or 2 millimeters in size to several millimeters big – and feel either smooth, slightly uneven or sometimes even coarse.
What Causes Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Underneath virtually every inch of your skin – except the palms of your hands and the bottoms of your feet – are sebaceous glands. These glands exist to create what dermatologists call sebum, which is basically just a medical term for oil, that helps keep your skin naturally lubricated and healthy.
However, we all know, sometimes nature gets it wrong. Sebaceous hyperplasia occurs when our bodies create too many of the special cells that comprise the sebaceous glands. These excess cells cause the glands to grow and grow, resulting in a little bump or bumps that can be seen on the skin.
As dermatologist Dr. Perri reminds his patients, sebaceous hyperplasia bumps can occur singularly, or in clusters on a certain part of your skin. Both occurrences are normal. The bumps can even appear in what seems to be a straight line.
Where are the Most Common Places to Get Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia can appear virtually anywhere on your body, but as dermatologist Dr. Perri of Perri Dermatology tells his patients, you’re most likely to find these bumps on your face, especially the forehead, cheeks, and nose. Some patients, however, may also find them on other parts of the body that have a high concentration of sebaceous glands, including the back, chest, shoulders, areola, and genitals.
