Melanocytic Nevi – Epithelioid Blue Nevus

Epitheloid Blue Nevi are a benign menlanocytic lesion that I occasionally encounter in both my The Woodlands and Conroe dermatology offices.  Epitheloid Blue Nevi are a rare type of Blue Nevus and are usually seen in patients that have the genetic syndrome Carney Complex as one of the cutaneous features.  Clinically, Epitheloid Blue Nevi appear identical to other Blue Nevi but on histology they have a unique finding of large epitheloid melanocytes and lack a sclerotic stroma commonly found in other Blue Nevi.  The most common anatomic locations to find Epitheloid Blue Nevi are the extremities, chest and back.  As these nevi are benign no treatment is necessary but if desired they can be surgically excised.
