Neural Tissue Abnormalities – Schwannoma
Schwannomas, also called neurilemmomas, are neural tissue abnormalities that I occasionally encounter in both my The Woodlands dermatology and Conroe dermatology offices. Clinically, a Schwannoma appears as a flesh colored/pinkish nodule and they are most often found on the extremities. Schwannomas have a predilection for women. Schwannomas can also be found in internal organs as they are a tumor of the nerve sheath. Typically, they are benign lesions but there is a malignant variant. Schwannomas can be seen in genetic syndromes such as Neurofibromatosis and Carney’s syndrome. Treatment of cutaneous Schwannomas is surgical excision.
