Panniculitis – Cold Panniculitis

Cold Panniculitis is a common skin condition that I encounter in both my The Woodlands dermatology and Conroe dermatology offices.  Cold Panniculitis is mostly seen in infants and young children.  Clinically, red indurated plaques develop within a few days on areas of the skin that have experienced a very cold object such as an ice pack or a popsicle.   Occasionally, Cold Panniculitis occurs on the scrotum of pre-pubescent males.  It is called equestrian panniculitis in horseback riders who develop it on the upper outer thighs from riding in the cold.  There is no treatment as the lesions resolve over a few days.
