As people get older, they become more prone to skin conditions and growths. One of the most common skin conditions is seborrheic keratoses. Usually black or brown, these growths are noncancerous and are not contagious or harmful.

Symptoms

Seborrheic keratosis grows gradually and with age. They start out small, around one inch across and usually appear around the neck, face, chest or back. They are usually round and can appear waxy or scaly. Varying in color, they can appear in clusters and cause itchiness.

Causes

There is not a definite cause of these growths, but scientists agree that it can be hereditary. It is also important to note that once a growth is present, more will likely grow as well. Usually seborrheic keratoses appear in patient’s 50 and older.

Treatment

Since they are harmless, treatment isn’t always necessary. If they persist or cause irritation, a dermatologist may be able to remove them or prescribe topical ointment to stop the itchiness. In some cases, doctors are able to remove these spots. If these spots become painful or bleed, it may be necessary to get checked out by a dermatologist as they might be turning into something more serious.

Prevention

Due to this growth being hereditary, there is no significance to prevention. The best way to ‘prevent’ seborrheic keratoses is to do routine checks to see if they have developed.

As always, symptoms can be different for everyone and it is important to get medical advice if needed.
