Smooth Muscle Abnormalities – Leiomyoma
Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that I occasionally encounter in both my The Woodlands dermatology and Conroe dermatology offices. Clinically, a Leiomyoma is a flesh colored to red/brown indurated nodule or papule. Leiomyomas may be either solitary or multiple and arise from the smooth muscle tissue of the arrector pili muscle that surround hair follicles and causes them to “stand on end” at certain times. Occasionally, pain can be felt in a Leiomyoma as the muscle tissue may spasm. Treatment is surgical excision if they become symptomatic.
