Keratosis is a common, long term skin condition. It consists of scaly bumps on the skin where skin follicles are. These bumps can be dry and can get worse due to cold weather. Scientists do not know what causes this condition. Even though these bumps are long term, it can be treated and often disappear with age.

What is it?

KP is a long term skin condition that causes small bumps on skin. Bumps can be scaly, red and dry. Bumps can appear on upper arms, buttocks and thighs where hair follicles are. These bumps are extra keratin in the skin. This condition is often linked with eczema and atopic dermatitis.

Symptoms

With any medical condition, symptoms differ for everyone. Many symptoms include small, hard bumps that can sometimes be red with a hair intertwined. They usually don’t itch or cause any pain.

These symptoms could also be signs of other skin conditions. Seek medical attention if any of these signs are presented.

How is it treated?

Keratosis Pilaris is long term and has no cure, but that does not mean these bumps can’t be treated for some relief. Lotion or cream that contain salicylic acid, lactic acid or tretinoin can be applied to help disguise the bumps and decrease the size. These lotions will also keep the area moisturized. When lotion is not applied, the bumps can appear again.

This condition is not life threatening and is very common. If you see signs presented, seek medical attention to discuss treatment and risks.
